What I’m Geek-ing Out To

Story by Caitlin Manocchio

WonderCon

The first week of April the Anaheim convention center will host another year of WonderCon. After attending my first convention last year I cannot recommend it enough. I got to cosplay with my friends as characters from Pokemon and meet and see amazing actors, writer, artists, and producers in the geek world.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries & Emma Approved

If you’re a lit or Jane Austen nerd like me, you have to check out the web series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved. Both shows create a modern retelling of Austen’s classic novels Pride & Prejudice and Emma with awesome writing and great acting. There are 100 4-8 minute episodes of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and 71 4-8 minute episodes of Emma Approved. Now that’s my perfect idea of a Jane Austen themed weekend.

Hot Topic

If you are an avid fandom lover, but can’t afford to buy expensive items off of Etsy check out Hot Topic. Hot Topic specializes in the latest geek culture trends. They have everything from Pokemon t-shirts to Kiki’s Delivery Service mugs at a reasonable price. It’s sort of a piece of nerd paradise.

Philosophy Through Science Fiction-Philosophy 104

Have you ever wanted to study science fiction and Chapman didn’t realize there was a class? This awesome class is taught by Professor Hugh Blake and introduces students to the world of science fiction and the philosophical questions it poses in the world. Get prepared to watch The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Star Trek, Futurama, The Prestige, and more. Also, it counts as for the required ethics GE at Chapman.

Community

I’ve been geek-ing out to this show. It’s my favorite and Yahoo! will be screening its finale season. If you haven’t watched, get ready for a pop culture explosion. The show is so amazingly weird and you will be often laughing at how meta Dan Harmon’s writing is. It’s awesome to have a show where the characters have conversations and episodes dedicated to Pulp Fiction, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, Doctor Who, and Friends.
