Dreaming By the Board

Story By: Jacqueline Clark

“I created a vision board. I had never had a vision board before. I came home, I got me a board and put Barack Obama’s picture on it, and I put a picture of my dress I want to wear to the inauguration” – Oprah Winfrey

Imagine everything you’ve ever wanted. That expensive car? It sits in your driveway. That high profile job? Yours. Your engagement to your celebrity crush, Ryan Reynolds? The wedding is in six months. All of this is real, all of this is happening, and you manifested it by making a Dream Board.

If Oprah Winfrey is manifesting the inauguration of the country’s first black president, what is stopping me from enacting a few miracles of my own? So that is why I decided to create my very own Dream Board; hoping that it would manifest my dreams, and more importantly my engagement to Ryan Reynolds.

Creating my Dream Board was a fun and easy task. All it took was a few magazines, markers, scissors, glue, and of course the board. I then pasted, cut, and collaged everything my heart desired and put it on my board. Including a gorgeous picture of Ryan Reynolds… shirtless of course.

I first heard about Dream Boards after watching the movie The Secret. In the film, Spiritual Advisor John Assaraf accredited his success and multi-million dollar mansion to his Dream Board. He reasoned this was all possible because by making his Dream Board he enacted The Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction states that whatever you wish to achieve you can, by simply envisioning it into reality. Thus, spawning the idea behind a Dream Board and promoting celebrities like Oprah Winfrey to use it to enact powerful events.

So what could I attract by creating my Dream Board: My Dream internship? My Dream wardrobe? All of the above? The thing about Dream Boards is that you can choose anything. It can be material or internal, it doesn’t matter as long as it is a dream.

Skepticism of the board and The Law of Attraction exists. Psychology Today writer Neil Farber writes in his article ‘Throw Away Your Vision Board’, “Dream about it, envision how you will realistically do it or get it, and then get off your tush and make it happen.”

Type  “Dream Board” into Google and you will get over 41 million results. These range from bloggers' how to guides, to quotes and testimonials of the Dream Boards’ power. It appears that it is a popular topic, whether you are bashing or promoting it.

Maybe making a Dream Board does enact this Law of Attraction that makes all your wishes come true. Or maybe it’s just that the Dream Board inspires you to finally take the steps in order to make them happen. Personally, making my Dream Board was inspiring. Being able to look at everything I have ever wanted laid out in front of me made me think of the endless possibilities life has in store.

If anything can be taken from the project, it is to believe in your dreams. The board promotes its maker to visualize their goals and how they can achieve them. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and realize your dreams.

Jac’s Dream Board: A How-To Guide

I had so much fun creating my Dream Board that I wanted to share how I did it so that other people can experience it for themselves! Check out my How-to-Guide on creating a Dream Board.

Disclaimer: CREATING A DREAM BOARD IS AN EXTREMELY EASY, FUN, AND RELAXING TASK THAT MAY RESULT IN INCREASED MOOD AND A SENSE OF OVER ALL WELL BEING FOR THE CREATOR. DO NOT CREATE A DREAM BOARD IF YOU FEEL NEGATIVELY ABOUT ANY OF THOSE FEELINGS, AS THESE SIDE AFFECTS ARE ALMOST 100% GARUNTEED.

What you need:

  • A poster board
  • Glue stick, pins, tape, stapler
  • Colored pens, sharpies, or markers
  • Magazines or printed photos
  • Plain white paper (for creating your own pictures, quotes, etc.)
  • Paint, glitter, and any other crafting supplies you wish to decorate with
  • A head and heart filled with dreams you are ready to make happen!

Time to Make Your Dream Board!

Step 1:  Lay your poster board down on a sheet or a piece of plastic (this can get very messy). My posted board was plain so I used spray paint to make a teal backdrop for my dreams to sit against.

Step 2:  Begin cutting and coloring your dreams, quotes, and pictures.  Make sure to keep them organized on the sheet so that you don’t lose them!

Step 3:  Before permanently pasting them on your board make sure to map out where you want everything to go. I organized my board by dreams, so in one area I had career aspirations; another had travel, then romance, and lastly personal goals. However, feel free to paste them how you please. You have total creative control!

Step 4:  Once you’ve organized your dreams to your liking, it is time to paste those bad boys on!

Step 5:  Decorate! Decorate! Decorate! Make use of all that glitter and brighten up your board.

Step 6:  THE FINAL AND MOST IMPORTANT STEP OF ALL. YOU MUST NOW ENACT YOUR DREAM BOARD AND THE LAW OF ATTRACTION BY BLASTING JOURNEYS DON’T STOP BELIEVING AND DANCING WILDLY AROUND IT UNTIL YOU LITERALLY WITNESS ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. (It’s a joke, please don’t do this, you’ll scare your roommate…)

CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR VERY OWN DREAM BOARD!

The Law of Attraction is an idea that gained notoriety after the popular film and novel The Secret was released. The Law states that whatever you wish to achieve you can, by simply envisioning it into reality. One way of doing this is creating a collage that depicts your dreams in the most literal form, thus forming a ‘Dream Board’.

Dream Boards are not the only way to enact The Law of Attraction. According to the thelawofattraction.com, you can utilize visualization tools, which help you envision that you have already obtained your goal, or positive affirmations, which help keep you focused on your dreams of the future.

There are other activities that can help put this law into practice. Yoga, writing, painting and other fun hobbies are recommended to those wanting to give this attraction theory a shot.

The Law of Attraction may or may not work at bringing everything you have ever wanted into your life. However, the activities used in conjunction with the law appear to be a motivational in helping you achieve your dreams.
